UFRaw is a decent and opensource RAW file utility. It works on many platforms and despite the ’80 looking site works quite well with NEF file from Nikon cameras. Ufraw is an helpful add-on to Gimp. I encountered an error message saying libgdk-win32 was missing. Gimpedtutorials.com has an handy how-to that worked for me very well.
